The Burning Ember Counseling FAQ
People have many questions about visiting a psychotherapist. I’ve created the Burning Ember Counseling FAQ to answer some of the more common questions. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, don’t hesitate to reach out and contact me!
As a shift worker, one of the biggest hurdles I have worked with is getting everything done Monday to Friday, 9-5. Getting to the bank, auto shop, specialists offices or just about anywhere is difficult when you’re a shift worker. With Burning Ember Counseling, I am hoping to address this need and will be available for more flexible hours including late evenings and some weekends.

No harm, no foul! Some personalities don’t click and that’s okay! Every counselor has a different style and I would be happy to refer you to other counselors in the area that may be more suited to your particular needs. You can get to know me a little bit on my About Jennifer Tuck page!
Counseling is an individualized process, dependent on your needs. Our first session will generally be spent exploring the reason you sought out counseling. After identifying your goals for counseling, we will move forward with a holistic approach. My goal is to provide a safe, judgement free zone where you can share openly, gain greater insight about yourself and to provide you with skills to use outside of session.
The goal of Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) is to use skills training to help individual’s change behaviours and unhelpful thinking, re-regulate emotions and alter difficulties with interpersonal relationship patterns. DBT uses mindfulness skills, interpersonal effectiveness skills, emotional regulation skills and distress tolerance skills to help clients observe reality without judgement or labeling.
The flower in my logo is a Fireweed. I chose this flower to symbolize “Burning Ember Counseling” because the fireweed is often the first thing to flourish following devastating forest fires. After the last of the embers go out, the Fireweed gets to work on restoring the ecosystem. I view the Fireweed as a symbol of hope, regeneration, growth and healing.
Counseling is voluntary. Everyone who attends counseling will stay for varying lengths of time dependent on their needs and progress.
Most clients attend counseling weekly or bi-weekly at the beginning, and move to less frequent sessions as they move forward. Your frequency will depend on your individual needs.
Burning Ember had a lot of significance for me. Symbolically, an ember can be the last sign of life before the fire goes out, indicating that the time for anxiety, anger or stress has come to an end. On the other side of things, a single ember is enough to become a strong and beautiful flame, provided it has the right resources. Additionally, EMBER is an acronym that stands for:
E – Energy & Empathy
M – Mind & Meaning
B – Body & Breath
E – Emotion & Expression
R – Reflection & Resiliency
A Nurse Psychotherapist is a Registered Nurse trained to provide psychotherapy and counseling techniques. I have my Bachelor of Science in Nursing and moved forward with my schooling to become a certified nurse psychotherapist.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an evidence based therapy in which we explore the connection between cognitions (thoughts, mental images, beliefs, interpretations and meaning) and our behaviours and emotional reactions to situations. CBT usually involves recognizing unhelpful thinking patterns and using problem-solving to change the way we think. It can also involve exposure therapy, relaxation techniques, role-playing, activity scheduling, behavioural experiments, journaling and reframing strategies.
